Peace

Don't panic, when all around you the world
seems to be spinning out of control. Settle
into the comforting, protecting, loving
arms of the Lord. That's the only place of
peace.

"And the peace of God, which passeth
all understanding, shall keep your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus."

Spring Surprise-Part 3

Echo. Yup, that fit my new little, white friend to a T. I decided to place
a folded blanket in the front parlor, behind my favorite wing back chair.
It would be his bed for the time being. I had to find some toys for him,
although I knew kittens didn’t require store bought ones. A crumpled
up piece of paper or string worked just fine. I walked into the kitchen
with Echo on my heels. I’m sure I have a small flashlight in one of
these drawers. I scrounged through the catch-all drawer. Old keys,
long forgotten to what they open, rubber bands and paper clips, ah,
here it is! A small, three inch, neon blue flashlight. I clicked it on to
check the battery strength. Good. Let the fun begin!

I pointed the beam of light onto the floor and slowly swirled it around
Echo. He stopped in his tracks and opened his eyes wide. I had to
remember to keep the  light in his field of vision, otherwise it just
disappeared to him. The beam stopped right in front of him. His right
paw caught it. Then the light moved a smidgen to his left. He jerked
his head, and his left paw shot out to capture it. After he tried to bite
it, the light started to shake because I was laughing and couldn’t hold
the flashlight still. The beam began dancing back and forth and Echo
proceeded to do the two step trying to catch the light with both front
paws.

Then he stopped, and all of a sudden high tailed it across the kitchen
for the pantry. I laughed so hard, I thought I’d have to change my
dress! A couple of minutes later he emerged and trotted over to
where I stood, and he sniffed the floor.

I decided to read some of my book which I’d begun the day before,
so I headed down the hall, with “Mr. Two-Step” close behind. I
picked him up and placed him on his blanket where he promptly
collapsed and fell asleep. Kittens play hard, and they sleep hard.

I had just settled into the chapter, when there was a loud noise outside.

Spring Surprise-Part 2

>> Wednesday, March 23, 2011

I slowly opened the envelope as I smilingly watched the young kitten
playing with Mr. Bean. My cat certainly seemed to be enjoying himself.
I focused on the lined piece of paper. The note seemed to be written
in a child’s hand.

"Hello.     This kitten is deaf and we can’t keep it. He’s a boy and has
his first shots. The vet has his cards. Please love him. I hope your cat
likes him. He needs a name.    Thank you.    A Friend."

Someone knows I have a cat. I wonder why they can’t keep the kitten.
But they can afford to get its’ shots. And deaf?

I picked up the white visitor, and looked at his face. Yup, blue eyes.
I know enough about cats to know that blue-eyed whites are often
deaf. I had had two of them over the years.

“Okay, little one. I’ll call the vet and find out what’s going on.
Meanwhile you might be hungry.”

I carried the kitten into the kitchen and placed him on the tile floor,
where Mr. Bean eats his food. I got a small saucer out of the cupboard
and retrieved a little cat food from the refrigerator. Mr. Bean took an
intense interest in what I was doing. I gave him a spoonful of food as
well, so he wouldn’t feel left out. Yeah, I’m an ol’ softy. The little guy
zoomed in on the dish of food, and Mr. Bean gave him a look, as if
to say, “Mind your manners, son.”  I also put down a small dish with
a little milk next to the kitten. After he was through inhaling the catfood,
I showed him where the nearby litter box was located. The side pantry
was the ideal place for the box, as it was out of my way. The kitten
managed to lift himself and his round, full tummy, into the box.
He peed. I clapped. Easy student. Joy in the pantry! Whether that
would be consistent was yet to be seen.

I dialed the telephone number for the vet. After giving my name to
the secretary, the vet himself got on the line. He asked about Mr.
Bean.

“Mr. Bean is fine, Frank. Do you know anything about a white kitten?”

I could hear his smile on the other end. Frank, the vet that took care
of Mr. Bean, admitted he did. He told me that the kitten was eight weeks
old, and had his shots. He also said something about a “trust fund”
for the animal. On my questioning, I was informed that whatever the
kitten needed was provided for.  I just had to tack a name on him.

“Who left him here?”  I asked the vet.

“I’m not at liberty to say.”

I could hear him grinning again. After hanging up, and more confused
than when I called, I picked up the mewing kitten, who was rubbing
against my shoe.

“You can’t hear yourself, but you have quite a voice! I might just have a
name for you.”

Hi there! Most people here in town know me, or know
of me, even if they won’t admit it. Many of them refer
to me as “Miss Myrtle”, because they can’t remember
my last name. I’m almost as old as dirt, which means
I have few friends around my age. I’m not as old as
Noah though, but I digress.

I live here in this old Victorian house, yes, the one in
three shades of green, with the wide front porch. I’m
out there quite often during the warmer months,
waving to passing neighbors. Sometimes they’ll come
and pass a few minutes with me. I enjoy that. My
cat, Mr. Bean, thinks he owns me. Don’t tell him any
different. Once in a while his friend, Rafe, comes over
and I end up chatting with him. He likes sitting on the
porch railing, watching the world go by.

I used to drive. I’m sure the townspeople all gave a
collective “WHEW!”, when I  decided to hang up
the car keys. Not that I was a bad driver, although
that one fence might argue the point. Anyway, I have
several willing young friends who drive me places.

You must excuse me, but it’s time to settle into the
Word. Please do come back soon for some tea or
root beer.

For By Grace

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift
      of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.    Ephesians 2: 8 & 9

Being human, aren’t we tempted to take credit for a good job done? But who has
made you healthy enough, or given you a sunny day, so you are able to get some
project accomplished? Every day is a gift. Every person is important. Opportunities
abound. A gift is freely given, with love. All that is needed is for a person to accept it.

Spring Surprise

Yesterday I came downstairs to find Mr. Bean standing at the
front door. He’s an inside cat and has never shown any interest
in that door before. Even if it’s open, he hangs back, apparently
afraid of getting sucked out into an unknown world. He does,
however, sleep next to a screened open window in summer.

So I leaned over and stroked Mr. Bean. He arched his back as
my hand went from his head to the tip of his tail. As I opened
the door, he backed up a few paces.

Sitting on the doormat on the porch was a small sized animal
carrier with a plaintive mewing emerging from it. I bent over
to see a very small kitten looking at me. My heart melted.
I straightened up and scanned the neighborhood for any sign of
who left this present here. It was a cool Spring morning, so
I decided to bring the carrier inside.

As I closed the door, and set the carrier on the wooden floor,
Mr. Bean came over to it and sat next to the cage door, and
purred. It was then that I noticed an envelope taped to the
top of the carrier.

The kitten looked as if it was trying to stuff itself through
the holes in the front cage door to get to Mr. Bean. I unlocked
the door and the totally white kitten emerged to touch noses
with my cat. Then the little visitor rubbed across Mr. B’s chest.
I think I saw them both smile.

I still needed to find out where this little one came from.
Who would abandon a little kitten? Why here? How would I
manage another cat?
I remembered the envelope and released it from the carrier.

Spring Welcome

What a great way to welcome Spring!
Sitting on my front porch strapping on my old roller skates
and tightening each with the all important key.  Got to love
that key. I have to stretch often as my muscles cramp up.
I’m not as limber as I used to be.

Whenever I go skating it seems my cat, Mr. Bean, cringes
with what he hopes won’t happen. I’ve also noticed that
my neighbors tend to disappear whenever I go roller
skating. Maybe they don’t want to be responsible for
scraping me off the sidewalk. They probably watch me
from behind the safety of a curtain. Why don’t they come
out and join me? They have no faith.

That’s where my walker comes in. For balance. I get up,
roll my feet back and forth to get the feel, yell YEE-HAW!,
and take off. Lifting my walker off the walkway, I roll
slowly down the slight incline to the sidewalk. The roughness
of the walk is rattling my dentures. But what a feeling of
freedom! Oh, how I love sailing along, with the breeze
whipping my hair!

I roller-walk along the sidewalk until I get to the curb,
then turn around for the stroll back home. As I approach the
house, I can see Mr. Bean watching me through the living
room window. He’s not hiding behind a curtain. I give him a
quick wave, as I make my way along the grass bordering my
walkway. Trust me,  climbing uphill is easier on grass than
on the walkway. More forward progress. I’m going to need
a nap after this exhilarating outing.
